I just got home and saw this sad news. My first stop is always CR when I see market turbulence, which happened again today.
Influential Economics Blogger Tanta Has DiedThank you, Tanta, for your wonderful and inspiring work.
"The econoblogosphere has lost one of its most influential voices, as the news emerged that Calculated Risk blogger Doris Dungey, better known as Tanta, passed away from ovarian cancer on Sunday.
Started in 2005, Calculated Risk emerged as one of the smartest and most influential blogs on the mortgage meltdown and resulting financial crisis. As one of its two main bloggers, Tanta, a former mortgage banker, helped explain the crisis in a smart, accessible way that made her posts a must-read for anyone looking for a deeper understanding on the situation. Her expert analysis and trademark wit elevated the discourse.
Calculated Risk will continue under her co-blogger, and will remain one of the key outposts for those looking for news and analysis of the financial crisis. However, the continuing discussion that is the blogosphere will be less dynamic in Tanta’s absence". – Phil Izzo

This is sad; she was a remarkable writer, and I learned so much from her posts. I was not surprised to learn that she had a graduate degree in English.
She was a joy to read. How enormously sad to learn of this.
Terminator-X,
Yes the graduate degree in English explains much about her keen ability to deconstruct poor Gretchen from the NYTimes. I've already been missing her insights for the last few months. Her clear-headedness will be sorely missed as we try to dig ourselves out of this mess.
We were probably all curious to know her real name, especially since it was clear that she lived in the DC area. But I'm sure we would rather have had her living 'persona' still with us.
I think I've read all of the 1000 + comments on the CR post announcing her death. One thing a number of people mentioned was how some of her pithiest pieces were extended responses in the comments section.
As someone who has never been very good at responding to the 'mad-dog' tactics of some of the housing trolls it was a delight to see the way she could take apart a sloppily made lunge and send the attacker on his way with a smart whack on the ass. And she did it with such humor and grace that a few of her attackers were even able to learn from it -- and come back with genuine arguments to contribute to honest debate.
All in all, a real, old-style class act.
